JFK: Religion's personal. Santorum: Yuck

What makes you throw up? Pardon my language, but Sen. Rick Santorum put revulsion in play this weekend.

Jackie Kucinich reports that Catholic Santorum stands by his attack on the President John F. Kennedy's 1960 speech about the role of faith in the presidency and the separation of church and state.

To say that people of faith have no role in the public square? You bet that makes you throw up. What kind of country do we live that says only people of non-faith can come into the public square and make their case.

Actually, that is not the thrust of Kennedy's speech, which speaks of all values being welcome in the public square with no one faith imposing itself.

In saying that his faith is personal, Kennedy may have spelled out a stance held by many Americans. He also cites the U.S. bishops' strong stance in 1948 favoring the separation of church and state. He stresses his decisions as president will stand on his conscience and the national interests.

Here's the whole speech so you can see for yourself.

DO YOU THINK... this is revolting? Can a president's faith be personal and not political? Should it?
